Myanmar Dental Health Science Conference

Associate Professor Dr. Oranart Matangkasombut of the Department of Microbiology and chairperson of the Center of Excellence on Oral Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University was invited to speak at the Myanmar Dental Health Science Conference organized by Ministry of Health on November 3-4, 2023 at Myanmar International Convention Center II, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. Her talk on “The impact of oral microbiome on oral health” gave an overview of how changes in the oral microbiome can affect systemic and oral health. A focus was given to her team’s recent work on early childhood caries, an important public health problem. This work on the prediction of future caries in 1-year-old children via salivary microbiome was recently published in the Journal of Dental Research. The study used next generation sequencing technology to identify bacterial biomarker in the salivary microbiome of 1-year-old children before caries onset that can help to predict caries formation at 2 years old. This is a candidate that could further developed into a prognostic tool that can help dentists to identify high-risk children so that they can offer targeted prevention in a timely manner. In addition, she also invited participants to join the 84th anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University and FDCU symposium next year.
