Course Background
Previously, education in periodontology was managed by the Department of Oral Medicine, under the leadership of Assistant Professor Dr. Waraporn Buathongsri. Therefore, there were individuals with expertise in oral medicine and periodontology within the department. Separating these two disciplines into two distinct departments was seen as a way to improve management and organization, which would in turn enabling the advancement of graduate-level education and research in each field. Consequently, this vision of Assistant Professor Dr. Waraporn led to the establishment of the Department of Periodontology in 1974.
Initially, the Department of Periodontology focused on undergraduate teaching, with an annual admission of only two students into the Graduate Diploma program. Later on, this number was increased to five students. The curriculum of the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Science Program in Dentistry (Periodontology) was revised and introduced in 1985. Then, in 1991, the Master of Science program in Periodontics was launched, led to an increase in research activities of the department.
In 2002, the department had further broadened its academic by introducing the Higher Graduate Diploma program to extend the Master of Science program by an additional year. Additionally, Residency training program in Periodontology was established to equip graduates with the necessary qualifications to pass an exam and become specialists recognized by the Dental Council. These improvements aimed to enhance the quality of education and research within the department.
Throughout its evolution, the Department of Periodontology has remained committed to modernize its teaching approaches and curriculum. This commitment ensures that students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels receive the maximize benefits for their education.
Principles and Rationale
Nowadays, people’s quality of life has improved, and there is a growing interest in oral health. This has led to the corresponding demand for higher standard oral health care services. Consequently, dentists are expecting to possess a broader range of knowledge, expertise, and specialized skills. Our institution is committed training professionals in dentistry, especially in the area of periodontology, to serve these needs. We aim to equip students with specialized skills and to foster research that will guide the prevention and treatment of oral diseases, particularly periodontal diseases that are a major cause of tooth loss.
In Thailand, access to high-level periodontal care for severe and complex periodontal diseases remains limited, and there is a notable scarcity of professional specialized in this field. Additionally, there is a need for the development of new knowledge in this area. Therefore, our curriculum is strategically designed to alignment with the philosophy/vision of Chulalongkorn University, focusing on learning outcomes and enabling students to choose courses according to their interests. This approach aims to cultivate graduates in periodontology, who are not only adept in their field but are also ethical, academically excellent, and prepared for lifelong learning, and to conduct research on the causes, progression, treatment, and prevention of periodontal diseases.
Why
this program
at Chula?
Faculty members with experience and expertise in patient care and research:
The faculty members teaching in the graduate program are highly qualified in the field of periodontology. They hold approved certificates or diplomas in periodontology or have completed their doctoral studies. The ratio of faculty members to students is appropriate, with a ratio of 1:1.5.
Research:
The Department of Periodontology is well-equipped to support the research work of graduate students. There are faculty members who specialize in research in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry, serving as advisors. Additionally, there are modern research facilities available at specialized centers for periodontal and implant-related diseases, as well as a center for oral biotechnology research. As a result, the research conducted by the department is widely recognized and has been published in both national and international academic journals consistently.
Clinical Work:
Graduate students in the periodontology program have the opportunity to plan and carry out diverse treatments in both surgical and non-surgical periodontal care. This includes procedures such as regeneration, root coverage, and crown lengthening, as well as various surgeries related to implant dentistry, such as free gingival graft, ridge augmentation, sinus augmentation, and implant placement. The clinical facilities for periodontology graduates are well-equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, and experienced dental assistants are available to ensure smooth workflow for the students.
