Program Overview

The residency training program spans three years and is designed to cultivate general dentists with expertise in Oral Diagnostic Sciences within Oral Medicine. It encompasses comprehensive training in Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology and Maxillofacial Radiology. The program aims to equip students with essential knowledge and skills vital for proficient application of these disciplines in disease diagnosis and appropriate patient care. The curriculum requires the completion of at least one research project.

The Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University stands as the institution with the highest number of faculty members specialized in Oral Medicine across the country. The department offers a wide range of Oral Medicine courses and provides students with ample opportunities to learn from a diverse pool of patients within the field. Collaborating closely with the Department of Pharmacology, the Department engages in research endeavors aimed at developing a range of medications for effective Oral Medicine treatment. Furthermore, situated conveniently in the heart of Bangkok, the department provides an optimal learning environment with easy access via various transportation modes.

Oral Medicine is the specialty of dentistry associated with the examination, diagnosis, and management of patients with soft tissue diseases in the oral cavity, oral potentially malignant disorders, and orofacial pain. Optimal oral and dental care for patients with systemic conditions also fall within the scope of Oral Medicine. Presently, there remains a scarcity of specialized dentists in this field, failing to meet societal demands. To address this gap, the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University offers a range of programs tailored to meet student needs and cultivate graduates with expertise in Oral Medicine. These programs aim to foster advanced research and knowledge development in Oral Medicine on both national and international levels. Additionally, they strive to instill high standards of quality, ethics, and professionalism among students. There are three main programs available:
– Master of Science Program in Oral Medicine: This two-year program focuses on the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with Oral Medicine conditions.
– Higher Graduate Diploma in Clinical Sciences Program in Oral Medicine (International Program): This three-year program also includes education and training in Oral Pathology and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
– Residency Training Program in Oral Diagnostic Sciences: This three-year program enables graduates to pursue a career in General Dentistry with specialized knowledge in Oral Diagnosis.
The Department of Oral Medicine has a team of highly qualified faculty members and top-notch facilities for both teaching and research purposes. It also serves as a regional referral hub for patients, aligning with the goals set forth by each program.

Course Details

Course Structure

The main components and training structure of the curriculum consist of:

Academic Department: Involves lectures, academic presentations, seminars, and academic conferences.
Compulsory Basic Courses
Compulsory Professional Foundation Courses
Core Specialized Courses
Elective Courses
Clinical Training: The practical training period spans 3 years.
Research: It is required to have at least one research publication or accepted publication in a nationally or internationally recognized journal of quality, as determined by the Office of the Higher Education.

Note:

  • Research work can commence from the 1st year to the 3rd year.

Duration of Study

  • 3 Years, 8 Academic Semesters

Academic Calendar

Semester 1:
Approximately starts from early August to early December (or as announced by Chulalongkorn University). Some courses may be taught before the start of the 1st Semester.
Semester 2:
Approximately starts from early January to early May.

Tuition Fees and other fees

Tuition Fee:
25,000 per academic semester.

  • The Royal College of Dental Surgeons provides a research grant of 10,000 Baht per person for trainees.
