Course Background
Due to the economic, social, and cultural advancements, along with new technologies and global trends, there has been an increased demand for specialized dental care. As a result, many dentists now pursue further education at higher levels to enhance their knowledge and abilities in providing diverse patient care.
In the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, there are a spectrum of care and treatment requirements, ranging from simpler procedures such as tooth extraction, uncomplicated wisdom tooth removal, and basic surgical care for patients with systemic conditions, to moderately complex procedures such as difficult tooth extractions, dental implant placements, preprosthetic surgery, and the treatment of dentoalveolar injuries and uncomplicated odontogenic infections. More challenging and intricate procedures involve the treatment of cysts and tumors in the jaw bone, complicated odontogenic infections or uncommon infections, facial bone fractures, and orthognathic surgery. Recognizing the societal needs and the diversity of oral and maxillofacial surgical practice, the Faculty of Dentistry has introduced various courses as options for dentists. One such course is the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Sciences in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which requires a one-year study duration. This program is designed to offer dentists an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and capabilities in oral and maxillofacial surgery at an intermediate level, meeting the demands primarily in hospitals and general dental clinics.
Furthermore, the course also prepares interested candidates to pursue further education through the Diploma of the Thai Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery via its Residency Training Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Message from the director
Hello and welcome to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University. Our department was established alongside the Faculty of Dentistry in 1940. For over 80 years, our department has been providing education, services, and conducting research related to oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Currently, the department consists of 18 Faculties and 8 staff members, including nurses, dental assistants, and administrative personnel. We offer education and training in four different programs: the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Sciences Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Grad. Dip.), the Master of Science Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (M. Sc.), the Higher Graduate Diploma in Clinical Sciences Program (International Program) (Higher. Grad. Dip.), and the Residency Training Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Residency Training).
Each of our programs focuses on providing knowledge and expertise in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with varying durations ranging from 1 to 4 years. The programs also emphasize practical training to ensure clinical competency and the depth of research work. All educational activities take place within the Faculty of Dentistry and the Dental Hospital, which include oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics, clinical research laboratories, operating theater, and post-operative care facilities.
Furthermore, students have the opportunity to participate in rotations and training in network hospitals both in Bangkok and other provinces. This allows them to gain experience in various cases that may not be encountered within the faculty. The department is dedicated to producing highly skilled dental professionals specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery and dental implantology to serve the public sector and private sector, catering to the needs of patients in terms of both prevention and treatment of diseases. This is achieved through the utilization of knowledge, skills, and research acquired from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University.
