The Residency Training Program in Operative Dentistry is designed to emphasize both theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in the field of operative dentistry with a wide range of patients. The program provides opportunities for conducting research and publishing in academic journals. Students are eligible to take the written part of the certification examination starting from the end of their second year, and they can take the oral part upon completion of their studies.

Course Background

The Residency Training Program in Operative Dentistry, Department of Operative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, is the first and pioneering program of its kind in Thailand. The program commenced its first class in the academic year 2005 and has been admitting trainees annually since then. This curriculum undergoes continuous development and improvement, with monthly curriculum management committee meetings and receiving institutional quality assessments every five years from The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Thailand.

Principles and Rationale

In order to produce competent specialists in the field of Operative Dentistry, the program aims to equip graduates with the following knowledge and expertise:

  • Possess advanced knowledge and expertise in both theoretical and practical aspects of Operative Dentistry.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of clinical science relevant to Operative Dentistry, including the ability to analyze and apply knowledge in disease diagnosis, treatment, reconstruction, and follow-up in an accurate and appropriate manner.
  • Possess the knowledge and ability to perform complex clinical procedures in the field of Operative Dentistry, including accurate examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis.
  • Understand general health issues of patients and provide appropriate and suitable treatment or referrals.
  • Provide consultative advice in the field of Operative Dentistry for the benefit of patients, collaborating with other healthcare professionals.
  • Continuously develop academic knowledge to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements.
  • Have a fundamental understanding of research methodologies and be able to present research findings.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critique and evaluate dental research.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards the profession, society, and possess good ethics and interpersonal skills with individuals from all walks of life.

Highly Qualified Faculty Members in Both Clinical and Research Fields

The department’s faculty members, including both regular and adjunct professors, are highly qualified in both clinical and research aspects. Many of them have earned their doctoral degrees or are experts in operative dentistry, both in Thailand and internationally. During the clinical practice, students will gain diverse experiences, ranging from complex restorative procedures such as dental restorations through various techniques such as inlays, onlays, dental crowns, restorations, managing tooth decay, and aesthetical dental restorations, including complex anterior restorations, teeth whitening, and veneers. They will also work with special-needs patients and engage in interdisciplinary practices, focusing on holistic patient care.

Research Publications at National and International Levels

In terms of research, the department boasts experienced faculty members specialized in dental materials science and oral biology. Collaborations with faculty members from other departments have led to a continuous publication of research works in both national and international journals.

Standardized Clinic with Comprehensive and Modern Equipment

The Operative Dentistry Higher Graduate Program Clinic maintains high standards, equipped with comprehensive and up-to-date materials and tools, such as CAD/CAM Milling machines. The teaching methods are diverse, including lectures, seminars, and case conferences, which will foster knowledge exchange and the development of critical thinking skills among students. The faculty provides resources such as a large library with up-to-date textbooks and journals, internet access to renowned journals, a simulation center, and research centers for dental materials and oral biology, facilitating smooth research work.

Training and Development Opportunities for Students

Additionally, the department supports extracurricular activities to enhance students’ capabilities. These include advanced dental photography training, CAD/CAM training, participation in academic conferences held by various organizations such as The Association of Operative Dentistry of Thailand and The Dental Association Of Thailand as well as participation in university clubs and associations. Basic life support training and voluntary activities, such as providing dental services within the faculty or in other provinces, are also offered. This ensures that upon graduation, students will be competent in providing comprehensive patient care in operative dentistry, possess research skills, and uphold ethical values and professionalism.

The Residency Training Program in Operative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, aims to provide knowledge and understanding of accurate and in-depth principles of operative dentistry. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling students to diagnose and restore damaged or defective teeth using various techniques and materials to return them to their original or improved state. This is achieved through the application of accurate knowledge and modern technology with critical thinking skills.
 
Trainees will receive a three-year training program that includes both theoretical and practical training, seminars, and case presentations, preparing them for certification examinations. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to conduct research, and previous students of the program have had their work published in national and international journals. The program has dedicated and qualified faculty members ready to provide guidance and training in an environment that promotes learning.

Qualification

Each academic year, a minimum of 50% of the available slots will be reserved for applicants affiliated with the government sector. Affiliated applicants must submit documentation of approved study leave for this program from their respective affiliations. Applicants must have obtained a professional dental license from the Thai Dental Council for at least 1 year and meet the English language proficiency requirements.

Activities of the Program

  • “Ban Pak Kret Dentistry Project”: Students will have the opportunity to provide dental treatments, specifically root canal treatments, to underprivileged children in Ban Pak Kret.
  • Faculty’s Free Dental Services: Throughout the year, students can actively participate in providing free dental services to patients during the Community Dental Health Day.
  • Continuous Education Conference: Graduate students in the program can engage in academic conferences related to the field, either as participants or as teaching assistants in practical and clinical sessions.
  • Advanced dental photography training and CAD/CAM milling training.
