Center of Excellence in Periodontal Disease and Dental Implant
The Center of Excellence (CE) in Periodontal Disease and Dental Implant was established in 2020, building upon the foundation of the Research Unit (RU) for Immunopathological and Clinical Research in Periodontal Disease, which operated from 2010 to 2020. Our center is dedicated to advancing knowledge in periodontal disease and dental implants, while also developing innovative technological platforms for the regeneration of periodontal, bone, and peri-implant tissues. Our ultimate goal is to enhance oral health as a critical component of healthy aging. The center’s research is organized into three main areas (please see diagram):
- Periodontal disease and systemic health connections: We focus on understanding the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease. Our efforts also extend to investigating the role of the oral microbiome in systemic health, identify risks through non-invasive methods, and conducting interventional studies to assess the impact of periodontal treatments on systemic diseases. Through multidisciplinary collaboration with expert from various medical fields, we aim to advance integrated care and improve overall health outcomes.
- Clinical Study and Oral Health Promotion in Periodontitis and Implant Patients: Our project aims to enhance oral health through clinical research, education, and public outreach in periodontology and implant dentistry. We conduct clinical studies to improve treatment protocols and ensure optimal long-term outcomes for patients. We also promote oral health awareness by sharing evidence-based content on social media, encouraging proactive dental care. Additionally, we organize continuing education courses and workshops to equip dental professionals with the latest techniques and knowledge. By combining research, public engagement, and professional education, we strive to improve oral health outcomes and advance the standard of care in periodontal and implant dentistry.
- Translational Research in Periodontal Tissues and Bone Regeneration Around Teeth and Dental Implants: Our work in this area focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms to drive scientific discovery and practical applications. A major focus of this research is the development of an innovative mRNA-therapeutic platform for periodontal and bone tissue regeneration. Additionally, we are deeply interested in the field of cellular aging and its effects on tissue regeneration, and overall periodontal health. This includes exploring therapeutic strategies to counteract cellular aging, such as targeting senescent cells (senolytics). Together, these efforts are paving the way for groundbreaking advancement in treatment and improve long-term health outcomes.
Our team consists of 16 academic staff members in the Department of Periodontology at Chulalongkorn University, all of whom are board-certified periodontists and researchers. They work across various fields, including epidemiology, clinical studies, and laboratory research in both in vitro and in vivo settings
We collaborate both domestically and internationally. For over 20 years, we have collaborated with the Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University on Thailand’s largest cohort study, the EGAT study, which explores the long-term connection medical and dental health. Within Chulalongkorn University, we also collaborate with various faculties, such as the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Internationally, we collaborate with mRNA experts and Nobel Prize recipients, Professor Drew Weissman and Dr. Norbert Pardi from the University of Pennsylvania, to develop mRNA-based therapies, including growth factors for periodontal and bone regeneration and improved implant surface modifications for better osseointegration. Additionally, we partner with Professor Murakami from Osaka University, a global leader in growth factor research for periodontal tissue regeneration. We also engage in knowledge and research idea exchanges with institutions such as Hong Kong University, further fostering innovation and collaboration.
These pioneering research areas not only push the boundaries of scientific innovation but also provide exceptional opportunities for students to engage in thesis projects. Alongside contributions to international peer-reviewed publications, our efforts have resulted in the generation of two international patents. Through these efforts, we strive to contribute to the scientific community, improve patient outcomes, and promote better oral health and quality of life, supporting overall well-being in aging populations.
