Intercollaborative Endodontics and Engineering Research Group
The Intercollaborative Endodontics and Engineering Research Group bridges clinical endodontics and mechanical engineering to advance root canal therapy through translational research. Our interdisciplinary team specializes in the biomechanical testing and fatigue limits of Ni-Ti instruments, the physical performance and tissue safety of hydraulic calcium silicate biomaterials and bioceramic sealers, advanced fluid dynamics and anatomical imaging, and tooth fracture mechanics. By integrating benchtop engineering with rigorous clinical outcome studies, we translate material innovations and procedural safety into evidence-based strategies that reduce postoperative pain, preserve natural tooth structure, and improve patient-centered quality of life.
Research Directions
The Intercollaborative Endodontics and Engineering Research Group advances root canal therapy through four strategic, multidisciplinary research pillars:
- Next-Generation Biomaterials & Safety: Developing bioactive hydraulic calcium silicate cements and bioceramic sealers while establishing clinical guidelines for tissue response and material extrusion safety.
- Biomechanics & Instrument Performance: Investigating tooth fracture mechanics, critical crack thresholds, and the cyclic fatigue resistance of Ni-Ti rotary instruments under thermal and mechanical stress.
- Fluid Dynamics & Anatomical Mapping: Utilizing advanced 3D imaging (CBCT/Micro-CT) and fluid mechanics to optimize root canal irrigation, prevent apical extrusion, and map complex population morphology.
- Translational Outcomes & Patient-Centered Care: Translating engineering innovations into prospective clinical trials to minimize postoperative pain, improve treatment prognosis, and enhance oral health-related quality of life.
